Krakow City of Students City of Traffic Jams

Every year Krakow after calm summer (despite tourists) comes to life at 1 October. This is the date when every Krakow University are starting new semester. In Krakow there is every year about 200 thousands of students. Mainly they are studying at 7 big public universities. Some of them are well know all over the world, not only in Poland, the most famous are Jagiellonian University, AGH University of Science and Technology and Tadeusz Kosciuszko Cracow University of Technology. Also there are quite a few private schools that gives students masters degree.

Even few days before lectures starts streets becomes crowded. Thousands of students are coming to Krakow from whole country. Of course Krakow has also a lot of foreign students. As a city it’s well prepared for all this students. It has thousands of places in campuses. Every University has its own campus for students. The biggest and best known is “Students City” which belongs to AGH. Some people are calling it “State in State” because it has its own rules. It’s place free of police authority. Only rector can allowed police or any other forces to visit this place. This “city” is inhabited by 9 thousands of students. It has its own stores and clubs, where only students can come after showing them students id.

The biggest problem when semester is starting are traffic jams. Unfortunately many students own their own cars. All city is blocked. It’s hard to get anywhere. Also using public transportation isn’t good idea. Most of students are travelling with busses, so there are so crowded that is even hard to get into one of them. For more wealthy students good solution is to use private transport. There are services like “Krakow transfers” which are offering us fast transportation. Their drivers know lot of shortcuts, and service like “Krakow airport transfers” or “Katowice airport transfers” when students are going out of town won’t take long. It all depends of money so not many students are using it. Unfortunately Krakow doesn’t have subway – it would help with terrible traffic jams.

I am also student in Krakow and I can’t complain. During this fife years I meet great people, I visited many great student clubs. But I still know that this city has many more to offer – museums, opera, cinemas…
